South Pasadena

From its early days as a way station for horse travel between Los Angeles and Pasadena, South Pasadena has grown to be a community highly prized for its role as a quiet enclave surrounded by larger cities. Some think South Pasadena is part of Pasadena, but this small town is its own entity with its own police and fire departments.

Real Estate:  Nicknamed the City of Trees, South Pasadena is replete with tree-lined streets and many older homes rich in classic charm. Craftsman and bungalow styles feature prominently here. There are also some condominiums and apartment structures.

Community Life: Despite its small size, South Pasadena has many parks. One of the most known is Eddie Park. The historic Eddie House and grounds were donated to the City of South Pasadena by the Eddie family and is a beloved local landmark. The Arroyo Seco Park includes walking trails and supports multiple habitat types that are home to native wildlife. The park showcases the history of the area through trailside displays and plant identification markers throughout.

The South Pasadena Farmers’ Market takes place on Thursday near the Metro Gold Line at South Pasadena Station. The Mission West District attracts both locals and visitors with its combination of well-rated local restaurants and charming independent shops.

South Pasadena is the oldest self-builder of floats in the Rose Parade. The all-volunteer organization receives some funding from the local Chamber of Commerce but also raises money each year for the float construction.

Education: The area is served by the South Pasadena Unified School District which is comprised of five schools. There are three elementary schools (Monterey Hills, Marengo, and Arroyo Vista) as well as South Pasadena Middle School, and South Pasadena High School.

Transportation: The Metro Gold Line makes commuting between South Pasadena and other areas very convenient. South Pasadena is also served by the Metro Bus systems. Several years ago the city adopted a bike plan to help provide for creating safe options for bicycle riders of all levels.

Local Attractions: One popular local landmark is the Watering Trough and Wayside Station. It was built in 1906 by architect Norman F. Marsh and designed to impress visitors arriving at the Santa Fe Railway station across the street. The South Pasadena Historical Museum is housed in the former Meridian Iron Works building and shows artifacts and vintage photographs that chronicle the early years of South Pasadena.
